Citizenship and civic engagement

 Project areas and opportunities surrounding International, State and Cultural Exchange; Community Service, Civic Engagement and Education. 4-H Civic Engagement is the knowledge, skills, attitudes and motivation that give youth the capacity to move beyond one’s individual self-interest and to be committed to the well-being of some larger group. 4‑H Civic Engagement programs empower young people to be well-informed citizens who are actively engaged in their communities and the world.

Youth make a positive difference by engaging in learning opportunities that give them a heightened sense of responsibility and capacity to connect as active members of their communities, nation and world.

Citizenship means helping out in your community and serving others without compensation. The 4-H’ersprimary goal is to benefit someone else

4-H Citizenship Project offers you the opportunity to help 4-H members relate all of their 4-H projects and experiences to the world around them. They will learn to care for and share with others through the skills and talents they’ve developed.

4-H Teen Teachers Corps

Our new 4-H Teen Teacher Corps is now taking applications for our Fall 2020 training cohort. 4-H Teen Teacher Corps members undergo a 25 hour training in the Fall and are then placed in a community site where they help coach, teach, and mentor younger youth in one of three topic areas:

  1. Agriculture and Food Systems;
  2. Cooking, Nutrition, and Food Security; and/or
  3. Entrepreneurship and Community Engagement.  

The 4-H Teen Teacher Corps program is designed to give teens the opportunity to give back to their community, learn important job skills, explore career paths and earn a small stipend. Now more than ever youth voice and youth action is needed in our communities to help find solutions to community problems.

Corps members strengthen communities, one community at a time and develop leadership skills through direct, team-based service. 4-H Teen Corps help create a stronger future for our communities by mentoring younger youth.

4-H Outdoor Cooking and Survival Skills (in English)

4-H Outdoor Cooking and Survival Skills Nothing exemplifies the 4-H motto of "Learn by Doing" quite like Outdoor Cooking! Oregon 4-H'ers have been learning to cook over campfires, coffee cans, BBQ grills, and more for over 50 years. In our state, we have an award-winning and nationally-recognized outdoor cooking instructor, Cindy Brown. Even if you don't live near Sherman County (where Cindy leads the 4-H Program), you can learn outdoor cooking skills at many of our statewide events, including Outdoor Leadership Training in May (for aspiring camp counselors), and at many summer camps and day camps throughout the year! Contact your local extension office for opportunities in your county.

Katy Zollner Memorial Scholarship (in English)

Katy Zollner was an active 4-H member in Deschutes and Douglas counties as well as an Oregon State University student. This memorial scholarship was established to honor her extraordinary career in 4-H and love of Oregon 4-H Know Your Government Program by helping youth learn and recognize their ability to impact public decision making.
