Baker County Livestock Producers Foundation Scholarship


The Baker County Livestock Producer's Foundation is to encourage the pursuit of educational opportunities and to emphasize the importance of scholastic achievement. Donations from memorials and private donations make it possible to offer scholarships each year without using any of the principal amount. The foundation will award a scholarship to a deserving applicant with the following qualifications:

• Resident of Baker County
• Accepted for a second (or more) year at any accredited college or vocational school
• Pursuing an agriculturally related course of study

Applicants will be evaluated on:
✓ Work experience (family work, paid jobs, volunteer labor)
✓ Accomplishment (academic, sports, music, community service)
✓ Need for monetary assistance
✓ Please attach a copy of last years' grade transcripts

This scholarship may be used at any time of year, the money will be sent directly to the school of the student. If for some reason, the money is not used by the recipient within a year it shall be
returned to the Foundation. Those who have been previously awarded the scholarship may
reapply the following year. If none of the applicants are deemed worthy, the scholarship need
not be awarded.

Baker County 4-H Leaders Scholarship

Application Deadline

April 15 (post-marked or hand-delivered) to: Baker County 4-H Leaders Association, 2610 Grove Street, Baker City, OR 97814

Purpose of Scholarship

  • To provide recognition for contribution to Baker County 4-H
  • To provide recognition for personal development activities in other leadership, citizenship and community service activities
  • To provide recognition for scholastic achievements in high school
  • To provide an incentive for further education

Use of Scholarship Award

This $1000 scholarship is offered to encourage three youth to pursue an education in any field of study at an accredited college, university, technical or trade school.

Use of Scholarship Award

Payment of scholarship grant shall be made to the applicable educational institution on behalf of the scholarship recipient. If the scholarship funds are not used within one year of the time given, the scholarship grant will be returned to the 4-H Baker County Leaders Association.

Application Requirements

  1. Applicant must be a 4-H member in good standing for at least three years in ninth through twelfth grade.
  2. Applicant must be a high school Senior enrolled in a Baker County or North Powder school, and a current 4-H member.

Attach to Application:

1. 4-H essay – minimum of 350 words/double-spaced, typed, font size 12.

2. Two letters of recommendation from community members (sealed envelope).

3. Transcript of high school grades

4. Include 4-H resume

Selection of Scholarship Recipient and Criteria

Winning applicant to be chosen by a three-person scholarship committee by blind review. Scholarship committee is to consist of 4-H leaders, appointed by the Leaders Association Executive Board. In addition to the three person committee, one executive board member will act as liaison in a non-voting capacity. The committee may decide not to award the scholarship based on the quality of applicants.

50% - contribution to 4-H program (based on essay and application)

25% - leadership and community involvement

25% - academic record

COCKRAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship program and fund has been established to honor Fred and Annette Cockram, long-time dairy farmers and supporters of agriculture programs. The recipient for this scholarship shall be a current graduating senior in Baker County, Oregon and must be a current 4-H or FFA Member. Applicants Should be planning to attend an accredited university, college, or community college with an agricultural major declared. The scholarship will be awarded by the consensus of the family of Fred and Annette Cockram or by a committee appointed by the family.

One scholarship in the sum of $500 shall be awarded each year, provided the balance in the Cockram Memorial Scholarship Fund is deemed adequate to grant the full amount of the scholarship. This is a non-renewable scholarship.

All applications must be completed and turned in by April 15th to the name and address below. A decision will be made by May 10th of each year.

State 4-H Scholarships

The State 4-H Program in Oregon offers scholarships to college-bound high school seniors who are currently enrolled in the Oregon 4-H program and have been members for a minimum of three years, including the current year.

Specific eligibility information for each scholarship can be found below. Application must be approved and signed by the 4-H agent in your county Extension Office. Check with your local county Extension office to find out what their scholarship deadline date is. Counties will forward approved applications and the County Nomination Form to the State 4-H office before the March 1st deadline.

Selection is based 55% on the Resume, 35% on the story, and 10% on scholastic achievement.

Please note: 4-H Members interested in applying for Oregon 4-H Scholarships should contact their county 4-H Agent during their junior year of high school for information.

Scholarships Available for Former 4-H Members Who are Currently Attending Oregon State University

  • Judith K. Hofer Scholarship: One $2000 scholarship to female OSU student currently majoring in Merchandising Management, or enrolled in the College of Business. Must have been in 4-H program for at least five years. Hofer Application due March 1 in State 4-H Office
  • Una May Davis Scholarship: One $2000 scholarship to a currently enrolled undergraduate student at OSU pursuing a degree in Dietetics. Must have previous 4-H experience. Davis Application due March 1 in State 4-H Office

Application Materials

County Fair Scholarships

The following Scholarships are available to Oregon 4-H members who are seniors in high school and have been active in their County 4-H Fair for at least 2 years. Applications must be approved and signed by county Extension 4-H agents, who will then forward the applications to the State 4-H Office by March 1. Check with your local county 4-H Agent to find out when applications are due in their office.

Submit all the information below, in the order listed, by hard copy. No electronic applications will be accepted. County Extension 4-H agents must approve and sign all applications. Do not submit applications in a notebook or report cover. All pages must be one-sided.

  • 4-H Fair Scholarship Application
  • One two-page essay explaining the benefits of fair participation for youth, and why such opportunities should continue in the future. Also outline your educational and career plans. Essay should be single-sided pages, double spaced, in 12 point Times Roman Font with one inch margins.
  • A fair leadership summary and 4-H fair exhibit and contest summary, including both pre-fair and county fair (1 page maximum each form).

Use the official Summary forms which are included with the application. Information included in the table is:

    • Year
    • Responsibility you had
    • Number of hours spent at the fair
  • Expected Financial Analysis
  • Two completed reference forms. Only the official Scholarship Reference Form (found in the 4-H Fair Scholarship application) will be accepted. Recommendations from your County 4-H Extension Agent, program assistant, 4-H club leader, fair superintendent or others familiar with your 4-H work are desirable. References from family members are not suitable. References may be printed and completed by hand. Forms should be returned to you in a sealed envelope.
  • Include a copy of high school transcript, to verify GPA.

Awards and recognition

The Oregon 4-H program provides a variety of informal and formal opportunities for youth to gain recognition. In most cases, recognition opportunities begin at the local or county level and then proceed to the state level. Older youth are provided significant opportunities for recognition at both the state and national level. While the recognition programs vary somewhat from county to county, statewide recognition programs are available to all eligible 4-H members.

Commemorating More Than 100 Years of Oregon 4-H

In 2004 the Oregon 4-H Hall of Fame was established to recognize individuals that have had a significant impact upon the 4-H Program and/or its members and leaders. One hundred people were inducted in 2004 - one person for each year 4-H had existed in the State of Oregon. More honorees are added each year. Visit the Hall of Fame page to search by Year (through 2017), County or Alphabetically.

State Awards

State level 4-H awards are offered each year to individual members who have demonstrated outstanding contributions in the areas of leadership, citizenship, and communication. There is also an Excellence in Teamwork award.

  • Applicants must be a currently enrolled intermediate or senior 4-H member
  • Members can receive an award once as an intermediate and once as a senior, but there must be at least two years between applications and there must be a major difference in the project or its scope.
  • Members may receive only one state award per year.
  • For the Excellence in Teamwork award, the project must have taken place within the past 12 months.
  • For every award, each county may submit one nominee for every 500 youth enrolled in their county (club enrollment).
  • Applications must be written by the 4-H member(s).

County Medals

County Medals are available to recognize 4 H members in project or activity areas who have demonstrated advanced accomplishments in a 4-H project, as well as in leadership and citizenship activities.

Counties must order and pay for medals directly from the National 4-H Supply Service.

Eligibility

  • Members must be in the 7th through 12th grades
  • Members may receive only one project medal per year
  • Members may also receive a Fashion Revue Medal or an Achievement Medal in the same year they receive a project medal.
  • If merited by outstanding accomplishment, members may receive the same medal once as an Intermediate and once as a Senior. (Exception: Fashion Revue and Achievement Medals may only be awarded once to any member).

Selection Procedure

Counties are responsible for developing a procedure to select county medal winners. It is recommended that counties form a Recognition Committee to review medal applications.

Experiences in 4-H Projects and Activities - 50% As shown by:

  • New knowledge, attitudes and skills learned
  • Scope and characteristics of projects and activities
  • Project and activity participation experiences

Experiences in 4-H Leadership - 25% As shown by:

  • Leadership participation
  • Offices held and committee assignments

Experiences in Citizenship and Community Service - 25% As shown by:

  • Development of positive attitudes toward service to others
  • Participation in citizenship and community service activities
