Forest Sustainability and Certification

Wood is seen as an environmentally friendly building product and is a favorite of the design/build community, as long as the forests are sustainably managed. This webinar will introduce a new video "Sustainable Wood from Sustainable Forests" which debuted at the recent virtual Mass Timber Conference and produced by OFRI. The video and webinar will help people understand the benefits of wood, the sustainable way that forests are managed, the laws that govern forest management, and the Forest Certification Systems that are used. The video will be followed with a presentation covering:

  • What is meant by sustainable forestry;
  • The international underpinnings of forest certification systems;
  • The similarities and differences of the various forest certification systems used in the U.S. including Forest Stewardship Council, Sustainable Forestry Initiative and American Tree Farm System; and
  • A comparison of the requirements of the forest certification systems to forest practices regulations in Oregon and Washington.
