How Food Shapes Our Culture | Annukhemera-t El

Transcript

My name is Annukhemera-t El, and I am from the South, specifically Arkansas. Food brings people together in my culture in every single way. Everything we do involves food: a birth, a death, a wedding, everyday life. We cook. You know, I definitely grew up in a culture that I won't say is the last of a dying kind, but we cooked food every day. We did not go out and get fast food or prepared food. We cooked our food every day, and we cooked our food as a group. That strengthened the culture. I remember cooking with my dad, cooking with my mom, my grandma, my aunts. All of the stories that go along with, 'Why do we do it this way?' and 'Where did this come from?' are all part of the culture.

Annukhemera-t El delves deep into the rich culinary traditions of her Arkansas roots. Discover how food is not just sustenance but a cultural binding force, uniting families and weaving stories. From daily meals to life's milestones, experience the profound ways cooking shapes identities and safeguards heritage. Learn more about resources from OSU Extension Cultural Working Groups.
