Native and Non-Native Insect Pests of Forest Trees: Diagnosis and Management

This presentation will cover basic information about bark beetles, wood borers, defoliators, and sap-sucking insects, highlighting major native and non-native pests (including emerald ash borer and Mediterranean oak borer). Attendees will learn about stressors that leave trees exposed to insect attack, how to diagnose the types of insects that may be causing damage and identify what insects are not of concern, and how to prevent or mitigate damage to trees.

Christine Buhl is a graduate of Oregon State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has served as an entomologist from Hawaii to the country of Lebanon, on projects from public health to chemical ecology. She currently serves as the state Forest Entomologist with the Oregon Department of Forestry, where she provides statewide technical assistance to public and private landowners, and she monitors forest health via aerial and ground surveys.
