Diane Choplin

Biography

Diane owns and operates Bel Avenir Farm in Ashland where she raises rotationally grazed lamb and pastured eggs, makes value-added products, and hosts Airbnb guests. She's dedicated to regenerative practices and drought mitigation via soil health. A member of the 2009 Land Steward cohort, Diane has received multiple grants and one corporate sponsorship for riparian restoration and infrastructure projects on her farm. She also writes and publishes creative nonfiction essays about food systems and the experience of farming. Before donning Carhartts, Diane lived an urban existence as a professional photographer and faculty member at Academy of Art University. "Peace Corps, parenthood, and a Barbara Kingsolver book got me farming," she says. Diane joined Small Farms in 2022.
