The OSU Extension Master Woodland Manager (MWM) training is a high level course for private landowners who are interested in an intensive forest management training and sharing the knowledge gained through this training with people in their local communities.
The course will teach you how to assess your woodland property by understanding local ecological factors (soils, historical land use, tree and plant species and associated wildlife) as well as how to conduct assessments to determine where your woodland is heading as it grows over time. You will also learn how various management activities will help you meet your long term vision for the property.
During the Master Woodland Manager program, you will:
- Learn from Oregon’s State University’s forestry, river, and wildlife experts!
- Gain knowledge and skills that you can apply on your property.
- Visit woodlands around the region.
- Meet and learn from other woodland owners.
- Get to know our region’s forest and natural resource professionals from various agencies.
- Become part of Oregon’s tremendous woodland owner and forestry community.
Class format and field trips
This unique training combines at-home readings and videos, online discussions, and focuses primarily on in-field training. In person field trips are held every two weeks unless otherwise noted.
This training is being held in conjunction with Lane County. Site visits will be located in both Lane and Lincoln Counties, with most sites roughly between Eugene and Newport.

Volunteer Service
After taking the MWM program, volunteers are expected to provide 60 hours of volunteer service, which is done in many different ways depending on your interests and strengths.
Application requirements
The MWM program is designed for small woodland owners. You must be a resident of the county the training is being offered in (occasionally neighboring counties are allowed in, if space is available and at the discretion of the host agent). The maximum amount of MWM trainees in one class is 25. Because this is a high level training it is required that participants have completed at least one previous training such as the Basic Forestry Shortcourse.
