Silvopasture is defined as the deliberate integration of trees and grazing livestock operations on the same land. We will discuss the practical application of silvopasture and how this land-management system can be adapted to various site conditions, livestock, and forest types. We will provide examples of silvopasture establishment and maintenance as well as how it can be used to promote economic and ecological resilience.

Speakers:

  • Mark Batcheler works for the National Agroforestry Center and researched silvopasture management for his graduate research.
  • Abel Kloster is the owner of Resilience Permaculture Design, a whole-systems farm and forest-planning group. He is the Agroforestry program director at the Center for Rural Livelihoods, a technical-service provider for the Natural Resources Conservation Service and is a board member for Agroforestry Northwest.
  • Don Tipping is the owner of Seven Seeds Farm and Siskiyou Seeds, a bioregional organic-seed company. He helped to found the Siskiyou Sustainable Cooperative and also co-founded the Family Farmers Seed Cooperative, a seed grower, marketing, and distribution cooperative comprising 10 Western organic farms.

Join online via Zoom on Wednesday, August 21 and in-person Saturday, August 24, at Seven Seeds Farm. (You’ll receive directions after registering.) There is a 30-person limit to the in-person class at Seven Seeds Farm
