Lisbeth Goddik, who served as the Oregon State University Extension Service dairy processing specialist for 20 years, has been appointed head of the Department of Food Science and Technology in the College of Agricultural Sciences. She had served as interim department head since January 2019.

Goddik was the first woman to serve in her Extension role. She is also the first woman to head the Department of Food Science and Technology.

She devoted a large part of her Extension appointment at OSU to help build an artisan cheese industry in Oregon. There were less than five artisan cheesemakers in the state 15 years ago. Now there are two dozen.

Goddik revived OSU’s creamery in 2012, where students create award-winning Beaver Classic, a line of artisan cheeses. She was the recipient of the 2017 Faculty Senate Outreach & Engagement Award.

She holds two professorships: the Paul & Sandra Arbuthnot Professorship and the ODI-Bodyfelt Professorship. Goddik is the member of several professional societies, including the Oregon Cheese Guild, Institute of Food Technologists, American Dairy Science Association and American Cheese Society.

Goddik is an executive board member of Oregon Dairy Industries, advisory board member for the Oregon Department of Agriculture Food Safety Committee, and ex-officio member on the Oregon Dairy and Nutrition Council. She is a section editor for the Journal of Dairy Science.

The Department of Food Science and Technology marked its 100th anniversary in 2018. It is the second-oldest food science department in the nation. The department has a strong, unique program in fermentation sciences, which includes cheese and dairy production.
