Summary

This publication is part of the Alternative forest management series. It describes a case study on thinning in the mature Douglas-fir stands common to interior southwestern Oregon, many of which have become dense and at risk of loss due to wildfire, drought and insect attack. Following a wide thinning from below, nearly all the trees in the study responded with increased growth and improved resistance to stressors.
