Summary
Introduces the traditional Japanese vegetable edamame (also called "vegetable soybean" and "sweet bean"), and explains its history and use in Japan and China. Describes how to select an edamame variety based on maturation date, pod characteristics, and cost of seed. Discusses soil preparation and fertilization prior to planting, seedbed preparation, timing plantings, planting, irrigation, weed and pest control, harvesting methods, and yields. Makes recommendations for marketing edamame based on customer and labor requirements. Includes maturation rates for edamame varieties grown in western and eastern Washington, application rates for lime, phosphorus and potassium, and contact information for seed sources.
