How do I source bees for a new beehive box?

A:

You have two options. You can either order a package of bulk bees and a queen from California or you can buy bees that are already on comb in a nucleus colony – known as a nucleus. I would contact a local beekeeping supply company. There are suppliers in Eugene, Corvallis, Salem and Portland and that’s just the starting list.

Tell the supplier you want to order a nut, which is best for a beginner. They will tell you the date they are available and give you resources, such as classes, to help you get started.

You can also access resources on bees through OSU Extension.
