The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that dairy cows in multiple states have tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. HPAI is a highly contagious, deadly disease of domestic poultry, although it is not so severe in cattle. There have been no incidences reported in Oregon in nonpoultry livestock.

Be aware of this disease. See resources below for signs, symptoms and safety. At this time, there is no concern about the safety of pasteurized milk or meat supply.
- For farmers, ranchers, veterinarians and others concerned about risks to their cattle, call the ODA Animal Health Hotline, 503-986-4711 or 1-800-347-7028, or email [email protected].
- Practice biosecurity by keeping wild birds out of contact with domesticated livestock. If you see sick or dead wild birds, do not collect or handle them. Report the incident directly to Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife at 866-968-2600 or [email protected].

- 4-H families with questions about the impact of HPAI on 4-H activities should stay informed and continue biosecurity practices. Contact your local 4-H educator or Candi Bothum, 4-H statewide animal sciences program manager.
Call your local public health authority if you are concerned about human risk. There is no reason to be concerned about illness unless there is a known exposure.
