A few years ago, my mom sent me a web link to information on how to get a tick tested/identified. I think it was from OSU. Might you be able to help me find the link with the specific information for where to send the tick?
Preserving tick samples
Ticks must be preserved when taking them for identification or lab testing. Here are two methods:
- Place the tick in a sealed container with enough isopropyl alcohol to cover the tick.
- Place the tick in a sealed bag in the freezer.
Tick identification
Tick identification can help determine the risk of certain tick-borne diseases. However, tick identification does not include testing ticks to see if they are carrying disease organisms. Here are three places where you can get ticks identified:
- County Extension offices: Please call ahead to see if they have staff with the expertise to assist you.
- Ask Extension: Submit a close-up, in-focus photo so we can identify the family of the tick.
- OSU Plant Clinic: Follow the submission instructions on the clinic's website. You can submit a photo or a physical sample to the OSU Plant Clinic.
Testing ticks for disease
Private labs will test ticks for disease organisms. You can find more information on the Tick Testing webpage from the University of Rhode Island.
The OSU Vet school did offer tick disease testing in the past. As of September 2023, they are unable to offer this service.
