How do we help our backyard hummingbird?

I am wondering if I can get more information on the hummingbird that has decided to nest outside my Portland window.

Can you tell me what kind of hummingbird it is and are there any interesting facts about their nesting behavior and breeding? When do hummingbirds usually lay eggs? How long before we would see babies? Is there anything we need to do to make sure she is comfortable and happy (besides leaving her alone which is what we are doing now)?

If you can send me any information, I would be grateful. It is a fun learning experience for me and my two little girls.

Wow! You're so fortunate to get to have sighted one, and to have this opportunity to observe this process!

Well, I think this page from Birds and Blooms has some great answers and links for further exploration that you and your kids can enjoy.

In short, she likely has two bean-sized eggs, and she'll sit on them for only 15-18 days, and then the little ones will need another month to get their feathers and be able to fly.

To help her, consider putting out a feeder. Dissolve 1 part sugar into 4 parts boiled water, then cool. Keep that solution fresh and clean, and make sure no cats are loose outdoors.

We here in Corvallis are super-fortunate to have a very active and productive Audubon chapter with a great website full of goodies you might enjoy. I'd also encourage you to find your closest local chapter because they may also have fabulous resources.
