Root and butt diseases of conifers in western Oregon are caused by fungi that decay live roots and can enter the heartwood of the roots and butt of the tree. They can have a profound influence on conifer plantation management. Proper identification of root disease is vital to determine the best management approach. We’ll discuss the identification and management of the four major root and butt decays of conifers in western Oregon: laminated root rot, Armillaria root disease, Heterobasidion root disease, and Schweinitzii root and butt rot. Bring pictures and specimens to examine.
